SAMHSA Grant Proposals Due Mid-February

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is accepting Applications to Provide Up To $8.9 Million in Grants That Will Promote Consumer Involvement in Restructuring Mental Health Systems

From Media Newswire by Staff Writer, January 7, 2009

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration  (SAMHSA)  is accepting applications for fiscal year 2010 for up to $8.9 million, over 5 years, to fund five consumer and consumer-supporter technical assistance centers (TA centers) that will strengthen and enhance consumer and directed approaches for adults with serious mental illness.

The goals of this grant program include strengthening consumer organizations and leadership in States where such organizations do not exist or are underdeveloped, restructuring of the mental health system by promoting consumer directed approaches and promoting skill development for consumers and activities that expand peer run alternatives.

Three of the grants will be awarded to consumer TA Centers and two will be awarded to consumer-supporter TA Centers. These programs will maximize consumer self-determination and recovery and assist people with serious mental illness by decreasing their dependence on expensive social services and avoiding psychiatric hospitalization.

National Consumer and ConsumerSupporterTechnicalAssistanceCenters is one of SAMHSA's infrastructure grant programs that support an array of activities to help the grantee build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective mental health services. The grants will not exceed $330,000 for each of the five years.
